You may think you can’t make homemade bread but I promise you if you have a large bowl and a mixing spoon, you can make this easy but oh so delicious peasant bread! It’s so simple that it makes me a little irritated when people prefer it over my more labor intensive bread recipes, yet they do! This isn’t a sandwich bread, but we’ve been known to make a sandwich on it. It’s great for ripping apart and dipping in olive oil or other dips and sauces. Now this recipe is amazing just the way it is but once you get the hang of it, you can actually do a lot with it. For instance add everything bagel seasoning, or incorporate some rosemary or other herbs. I have even made faux focaccia with it. It’s very forgiving and impossible to mess up!

Ingredients:

4 cups all purpose flour

2 cups warm water

1 tablespoon yeast

1/4 cup sugar

1 teaspoon salt

Melted butter for brushing on after baked

Directions:

  1. Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Add warm water.

  2. Mix until all ingredients are incorporated

  3. Cover and put in a warm place to rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size

  4. Once doubled mix back up with wooden spoon dump into a well buttered oven safe dish. It can be whatever shape or kind of dish you’d like. I used a cake pan. Anything will work that allows room for the dough to double in size. Cover and let rise 30 minutes or until doubled in size.

  5. Bake at 425 for 10 minutes then reduce heat to 375 for 10 minute. Butter the top of bread while hot and let it cool 10 minutes in the pan. That’s it! Enjoy!

Note: If you want to had any dried herbs or seasoning do so when you’re mixing together your dry ingredient.

If you‘d like to add a topping like everything bagel seasoning, before baking after the second rise gently brush dough with an egg wash ( 1 egg mixed with 1 tablespoon water) and shake on seasoning. Bake as directed
