Years ago, for a short time, I lived in New York, and there's no doubt that's where you will find the best pizza, rolls, bakery goods and certainly bagels. But since I live a solid 19 hours from the delicious city, I have learned to make my own. And you can too. They'll be the next best thing to NYC.
This recipe will make 8 bagels
Ingredients:
1 1/4 cup warm water
1 Tablespoon yeast
2 Tablespoon sugar
3 1/2 cups of flour
1 1/2 Teaspoons salt
Directions:
In a mixer combine water, yeast and sugar
Using your dough hook, turn you mixer on low and add salt and flour 1 cup at a time
Allow to knead for 10 minutes until dough is smooth and not sticky
Form into a ball, cover and let rise 1 hour
Punch down dough and let it rest 10 minutes
While waiting, fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil over a high heat
Preheat you oven to 425 degrees
Divide dough into 8 equal pieces
Roll each piece into a smooth ball
Using your thumbs push a hole through the middle of the ball and and stretch the dough to form a bagel shape
Boil bagels for one minute on each side, I like to use chop sticks to turn them over in the pot. don't over crowd the pot, I do 4 at a time.
Place boiled bagels onto a lined baking sheet
Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown
Enjoy!
